05/09/2008 - Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (Golf Betting) - Professional golfer Jeff Maggert's brother was killed Thursday when a single-engine plane he was piloting crashed in a mountainous area in Colorado.

The plane went down in a rugged, wooded area at 10,300 feet near the city of Black Hawk, according to the Aspen Daily News, which reported Barry Maggert was on the way to his son's graduation in Boulder at the time of the crash.

The paper reported one fatality and one injury in the crash of the 1965 Cessna 182 it said was co-owned by Barry Maggert and another person. The plane was losing altitude and engine power when it lost radar contact 35 minutes into the flight, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The plane's co-owner told the paper that Maggert had been a pilot for "a fair amount of time" and was "a good pilot."

He had three sons, including 23-year-old twins. One of the twins, Lee, was set to graduate from the University of Colorado. The other passenger in the plane that crashed was said to be a 23-year-old man, who dialed 911 for help and was flown to a nearby hospital after being rescued from the mountainside by a helicopter.

A video filmed by KMGH-TV showed the plane lying in the snow nestled among trees on a mountainside. The station reported rescuers were lowered to the scene in windy conditions. More than 30 people were involved in the operation.

There were plans to return to the scene on Friday.

Jeff Maggert withdrew from the Players Championship on Thursday after opening with an even-par 72 in the first round. He notified tournament officials that his brother had been killed.

Barry Maggert, who was the PGA Tour pro's older brother, was a structural engineer at his own firm in Carbondale, Colorado. He was 55.

He had run for public office in Colorado at least twice, according to the Aspen Daily News, and a Web site could be found detailing a previous candidacy for the Colorado House of Representatives as a Libertarian.

Jeff Maggert is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour. A married father of five, he played for the United States on three Ryder Cups from 1995-99.
