D'Backs, Cubs start series at Wrigley

Baseball Betting Lines

05/09/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A pair of playoff hopefuls get together for a three-game series that begins this afternoon at Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first meeting between the teams since last year's National League Division Series.

The 2007 NL West champion Diamondbacks easily handled the Central-winning Cubs during that postseason skirmish, as Arizona swept the best-of-five series and clinched a berth into the NLCS with a 5-1 victory at Wrigley Field in Game 3. The Diamondbacks also won four of their six regular-season matchups with Chicago and are 16-6 against the Cubs (including last year's postseason) since the start of the 2005 campaign.

Arizona has played like a playoff team during the early portion of this season as well. The Diamondbacks own the best record in the majors at 23-12 and own a 3 1/2-game lead on Los Angeles for first place in the NL West at the moment.

The Diamondbacks hit the road after splitting a four-game series with Philadelphia at Chase Field earlier this week. Arizona evened the set behind Brandon Webb on Thursday, as the ace right-hander went the distance on a six- hitter to lead his club to an 8-3 decision over the Phillies.

Webb (8-0) surrendered three runs -- two earned -- and struck out four to win his eighth straight start to begin the season. The sinker specialist also won his first eight decisions in 2006, the year he captured the NL's Cy Young Award.

Chris Snyder went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Diamondbacks, who also received home runs from both Justin Upton and Chris Young on the afternoon. Mark Reynolds ended 3-for-4 with an RBI in the win.

Chicago begins a 10-game homestand this afternoon and currently sits two games behind rival St. Louis for the top spot in the NL Central. The Cubs have dropped five of their last seven contests and were routed by the Cincinnati Reds in their most recent trip to the diamond.

In Wednesday's finale of a three-game series, the Reds belted seven home runs to back seven shutout innings from Edinson Volquez to hand Chicago a 9-0 setback at Great American Ball Park.

Joey Votto went deep three times for Cincinnati, while Volquez struck out 10 Cubs and yielded just four hits before turning the game over to his bullpen.

Jon Lieber (2-2) lasted just two innings in his first start of 2008. The veteran righty was shelled for five runs on seven hits, including four home runs, during his short stint.

The slumping Cubs face another tough challenge today in Arizona's Dan Haren, who has amassed an impressive 4-1 record and a 3.12 earned run average over his first seven starts as a D-Back.

Haren, acquired from Oakland in a blockbuster offseason trade, received a no- decision in his most recent outing despite pitching well enough to earn another win. The All-Star righty limited the New York Mets to two runs and three hits and matched a season-best with seven strikeouts over six innings this past Sunday.

The 27-year-old will be facing the Cubs for the first time since 2004, when Haren was a member of the Cardinals. In two lifetime starts against Chicago, one a loss and the other a no decision, he has been tagged for 12 runs and 16 hits over just 8 2/3 innings.

Chicago counters with Ted Lilly, who appears to have gotten himself back on track after a rough beginning to the season. The left-hander is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA over his last three starts, compared to an 0-3 mark and a woeful 9.16 ERA during his first four mound trips of the year.

Lilly worked a season-high seven innings to defeat St. Louis on Saturday, holding the Cardinals to three runs on six hits and issuing just one walk.

The two-time 15-game winner is 0-2 in four career regular-season appearances against Arizona, including a pair of starts, despite having pitched to a respectable 3.38 ERA in those games. However, Lilly was shelled for six runs in just 3 1/3 innings by the Diamondbacks to suffer the loss in Game 2 of last year's NLDS.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.

MySportsbook.com week 1 NFL lines

Now that the 2007 NFL schedule is finally out, it is only matter-of-course for lines on “Week 1” to follow.  Of course MySportsbook.com is the first to churn out odds for the NFL’s inaugural week for the upcoming season.   Expect a lot of fireworks the first Thursday night of the season as the defending champion Indianapolis Colts face off against the surprise of the 2007 season, the New Orleans Saints.  These teams were ranked #1 and #3 in the NFL respectively a season ago so a high scoring affair could be in order.  As of now, the Colts will be giving 6 points to the Saints; keep in mind the Saints were one of the better road teams last season going 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS.  The first Monday night of the season will again provide a “double feature”. Coming off a disappointing season, the Cincinnati Bengals will look to get back to playoffs and improve their public image as they take on the AFC North favorite Baltimore Ravens.  The second game features a couple of teams that haven’t had too much success recently but each could make some noise if the NFC is as weak as it was last year as the San Francisco 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. The most interesting game of the opening week will feature the NFC champion Bears as they hit the road to take on the NFL’s top team during last year’s regular season, the San Diego Chargers.
